Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your Windows 10 PC will continue to function beyond this date, Microsoft will stop providing essential services like security updates and technical assistance that keep your system secure and running smoothly.

Why Business Owners Must Take Action Now

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly exposed to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks, putting your critical business data at serious risk. Upgrading to a newer Windows version is vital to safeguard your operations.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to work with the latest operating systems. After Windows 10 reaches its end-of-life, some programs you rely on may malfunction or stop working entirely.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or subject to strict regulations must stay updated to avoid compliance violations, potential fines, and legal complications.

Your Upgrade Options Explained

Microsoft recommends transitioning to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. Attempting to upgrade incompatible PCs will result in error messages.

If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program (details below)
  • Switch to a Linux operating system
  • Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (strongly discouraged!)

Regardless of your choice, always back up your important data before making any changes to prevent data loss.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for Windows 10, but only for one year past the end-of-life date in October. This is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.

You can sign up for ESU by paying a $30 fee or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Alternatively, there is a free option that requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive provides 5 GB of free storage, and additional space may be necessary for large data volumes.

Be sure to register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to maintain security coverage.
